What Size Ductless Heat Pump Do I Need?

Square footage is a useful starting point, but a properly sized ductless system also depends on ceiling height, windows, insulation, sun exposure, room layout and how the space is used. Use this guide to understand the basics, then use the sizing tool for a preliminary recommendation.

What Changes the Size You Need?

Ceiling Height

Taller or vaulted ceilings increase the volume of air the system must condition. A 500 sq ft room with a 12 ft ceiling can require more capacity than the same room with an 8 ft ceiling.

Windows & Sun

Large glass areas, west-facing windows and strong afternoon sun can increase cooling load. Shaded rooms may need less.

Insulation & Air Leakage

Older or poorly insulated homes can lose heat faster in winter and gain heat faster in summer. Air sealing and insulation matter.

Room Layout

Ductless heads work best when conditioned air can reach the occupied space. Hallways, closed doors and divided floor plans affect whether one zone can serve multiple areas.

Portland/Vancouver Winters

Heating performance matters as much as cooling. Final equipment selection should consider the home's heating load and the selected Daikin system's performance at lower outdoor temperatures.

Kitchens & Occupancy

Cooking appliances, electronics and regularly occupied rooms can add heat. Bedrooms and low-load spaces may behave differently from busy living areas.
